Call of Duty 2: Part 15 — The Normandy Breakout & Hedgerow Tactics

Division: 7TH_ARMOUR_VETERANS Theater: NORMANDY_1944

Operational Log: The Road to Caen

Call of Duty 2: Part 15 — Hedgerow Warfare & AI Coordination

I. Historical Context: June 11, 1944

In Part 15, we shift from the sweeping vistas of North Africa to the claustrophobic "Bocage" country of Normandy. Set shortly after D-Day, the 7th Armoured Division—the legendary "Desert Rats"—is tasked with probing the Western flank of German defenses to clear a supply route to the city of Caen.

This mission introduces a fundamental shift in combat engagement distances. The high hedgerows and tight orchard lanes create a perpetual state of Close Quarters Battle (CQB), where the open-field Line of Sight (LoS) logic used in the Libyan campaign is entirely discarded in favor of vertical occlusion and blind-corner navigation.

II. Technical Analysis: NavMesh & Ambush Logic

From a technical standpoint, Part 15 highlights the Infinity Ward Engine 2.0's dynamic pathfinding. Because the orchard navigation is non-linear [00:03:04], squadmates must constantly recalculate their NavMesh positions to maintain a supporting formation. Unlike the scripted paths of earlier titles, the AI here dynamically seeks cover relative to the player's current coordinate.

Tactical Feature: Occlusion Culling

The dense Normandy foliage serves a dual purpose. Beyond historical accuracy, the hedgerows act as Occlusion Culling zones. The engine optimizes performance by not rendering any assets on the opposite side of the hedge, allowing for the high-fidelity 1080p capture seen in this walkthrough. This hardware optimization enables the volumetric smoke and soft particles required for authentic-looking smoke grenade deployment without dropping frames.

III. Operational Breakdown: The Orchard Skirmish

[00:03:04] Flanking Coordination: As McGregor leads the diversionary squad down the main road, the player must utilize the orchard to flank German MG-42 nests. On Veteran difficulty, success depends on moving between apple trees only during the reload cycles of the enemy machine guns.
[00:09:37] Scripted Logistics: The retrieval of the German Lorry demonstrates the "event-based" scripting of Call of Duty 2. The AI shifts from "Aggressive Pursuit" mode to "Defensive Guard" mode once the truck is secured, creating a high-stakes escort sequence.
[00:13:40] The Crossroads Stand: The final defense requires 360-degree awareness. The stone walls provide the only reliable protection against the high-penetration Kar98k rounds. We recommend the Bren LMG for its superior stopping power during this final German counter-assault.

IV. System Performance & Audio Spatiality

This session was benchmarked using DirectX 9.0c with full shader support. To replicate the visual depth shown in our Black Ops 6 Analysis, we have enabled Soft Particles and Specular Highlights. Additionally, the use of **EAX Advanced HD 3.0** is critical for this mission; hearing the "ping" of an empty M1 Garand or the distinct clatter of a German MP-40 through the hedges provides the spatial awareness needed to avoid ambushes.
